Portland, Maine: Day 1

Josh and I just got back from such a fabulous trip to Portland, Maine. My wonderful friend Catherine babysat our girls, so Josh and I could have a fun weekend alone after spending the summer apart. We never do trips like this, so it was such a fun trip for us!
Our first stop on Friday night was dinner at OTTO, a cool little pizza place in Portland's art district. The pizza flavors were really unique and just as delicious as we had heard.
Next we walked up the street to the Portland Museum of Art. They have a really great collection of art and we had a fun few hours looking through their galleries.

Josh's favorite part was a special exhibit with Winslow Homer's woodcut drawings from the Civil War. I didn't realize that during the Civil War Winslow Homer accompanied the troops for much of the time and illustrated the battles and the day to day life of the troops. Then his beautiful illustrations were printed in the newspaper.

I love John Singer Sargent's portraits and there were a few good ones.
A beautiful marble sculpture of Ulysses S. Grant

After the museum we walked a few minutes to an ice cream shop a few of our friends had raved about called Mount Desert Island. Their ice cream is totally organic and made from fresh Maine ingredients, and it really was amazing! After sampling tons of their unique flavors, I went with Poppy Seed Lemon Blackberry and Josh had Maine Sea Salt Caramel and Peach Maple something or other. So so good!
Such a fun night in Portland!
